It might be tempting to dismiss this as megalomania. But I would prefer to see in it something of the 'fabulation' function that Deleuze draws from Bergson, a concept that Bergson (1935: 153—60) himself develops in part through discussion of the psychological effects of an earthquake. For Deleuze, fabulation or myth-making occurs when the shock of an event (be it an earthquake or a literary construction) produces visions or hallucinatory images that substitute for routine patterns of perception, supernatural agential powers that appear to guide the event (Bogue 2006). In Deleuze and Guattari's (1994: 171) reading, such fabulation is a weapon of the weak, a means of fabricating 'giants' (often from the most inauspicious resources) as germinal agents with real-world effects in the service of political change. In Luca's case, the most feeble of objects become yoked with the geological movements of the Earth as material expressions of the impulse for revolutionary change. The conjunction floods his sense impressions as a real or effectuating hallucination that, for a moment, mistakes the catastrophe of the earthquake for the chaotic joy of a revolutionary transformation of the world, a joy manifest or handled (and perhaps preserved) in the O.O.O.
